Hiring Sequence and Timeline
-709AS Hiring boards and interviews meet twice a year March and October (cutoff 2 months prior to board for completed applications)
-Interview process and meet and greet in Dover (1.5 days in Dover). Fri night social followed by interview, lunch and tour of the C-5 or fly the C-5M full motion on Sat

From Hired by 709th to Flying the C-5 at Dover ≈2yrs:
1. Scheduled for Military Entrance Processing Stations MEPS & Flying Class 1 Physical in Wright-Patterson AFB (travel and accommodations paid for by the 709th) – 2 month process
2. AFRC Board consideration held every other month (great success for qualified and sponsored candidates) – 2 months
3. Officer Training School (OTS)- 7 weeks in Maxwell AFB, AL
4. Undergraduate Pilot Training (UPT) in either Mississippi, Texas or Oklahoma flying the mighty T-6 Texan II and the T-1 Jayhawk – 13 months (10yr Reserve commitment acquired following graduation from UPT)
5. C-5 School in Lackland AFB, Texas – 5 months
6. Take home pay while in all training ≈ $4,500/month

What to Expect after you return to the 709th as a fully qualified C-5 Reserve Pilot:
– A C-5 Progression (prog) Tour of 6-months after returning to Dover (full-time orders)
– Awesome international flying including Atlantic and Pacific missions
– An introductory full-time C-5 Air Reserve Technician position with the 709th if desired/available after 6 months or the ability to live where you want after your prog tour
– As a part-time C-5 reserve pilot you usually work an average of 4-days/month to stay proficient & qualified
– Our most recent pilot graduate made ≈$85,000 take home between tax-free pay/housing allowance and per diem and flew 650 flt hrs in his first year out of training!

How to Apply

How to become a Reserve US Air Force Pilot in the 709th Airlift Squadron, Dover AFB, DE Requirements to Apply: 1. Cover Letter (who you are and why you would like to be an Air Force Reserve pilot) & Resume 2. Level of Education (3 scenarios): Bachelor’s degree w/official transcripts or within 9-months of Graduation and unofficial transcripts or in a current Air Force ROTC scholarship program and before your junior year of college 3. Private Pilot Certificate 4. Take Air Force Officer Qualifying Test (AFOQT) and Test of Basic Aviation Skills (TBAS), both scheduled by Local Air Force Reserve Officer Recruiter (email us and we’ll put you in touch with them) 5. 3 Letters of Recommendation (Highly encouraged to be written by a former military member or someone attesting to your flying ability/personal attributes).
