Traditional Guardsmen C-17A Pilot (UPT)

183d Airlift Squadron – Posted by bryanjdevries Jackson, Mississippi, United States

Job Description

Upon completion of SUPT, survival schools, and C-17 qualification training, the aircrew member must remain current and qualified in the unit aircraft at all times to meet the unit’s shot notice mobility requirements. This normally requires approximately 60 days per year (5 days per month) to be dedicated to flying and unit training. The image of one weekend per month and two weeks during the summer simply does not apply to pilots due to the Strategic Airlift mission and operations tempo. The 183rd Airlift Squadron was activated in the first call up during Desert Shield/Desert Storm and is a highly valued asset by the Air Force in the Total Force concept for global airlift.

As the Air Force draws down, the Total Force concept will play a more significant role in America’s strategy for global response. With this increase in U.S. reliance on the Air National Guard, the possibility of future activation certainly exists and must be considered carefully by the applicants.
