Selection Process:  Following is a summary of the selection process:

  1. Application packages will be screened for required contents, and pre-qualifying interviews will be accomplished by the recruiting staff.  All complete packages will be forwarded to the 173rd Air Refueling Squadron (ARS) Aircrew Selection Board (ASB) for further review.
  2. The ASB will determine which candidates will be selected to personally interview with them.  All travel, lodging, meals and any other expense, is the responsibility of the candidate.
  3. Based upon the results of the personal interviews, the ASB will select a number of candidates to continue in the selection process.  Those not selected to continue will be eliminated from further consideration for this announcement only.  However, they are NOT necessarily considered ineligible to apply for future vacancies.  Please note, SUPT applicants are only allowed to interview twice with the 173ARS.  If you are NOT selected for an interview, your application will not count against your two interview limit for other SUPT boards.
  4. Candidates selected to continue will be referred to the recruiting office for qualification screening, administration of the Basic Attributes Test (BAT), USAF Flying Class I Flight Physical and security clearance screening.
  5. Candidates will complete all required processing actions to secure approval as a candidate for commissioning and pilot training.  If you are not currently a member of the NE Air National Guard, you will be required to enlist in the unit as soon as possible.  This may require multiple trips to the unit at member’s expense.  The recruiting process can take up to 12 months to accomplish all required tasks.
  6. Your package must be approved by the 155ARW Wing Commander before your finalized package is forwarded to the National Guard Bureau (NGB) for approval.  Once approved by NGB officials, primary selectees will be placed into actual training quotas for the USAF Initial Flight Screening (IFS) the ANG Total Force Officer Training (TFOT), Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training (SUPT) and follow-on aircraft qualification training.
  7. IFS is four week course and is located in Pueblo, Colorado.  IFS is a prerequisite program used to introduce Active Duty, Air National Guard, Air Force Reserve Officers and ROTC cadets, who are candidates for Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training (SUPT), to the basics of aviation before attending SUPT training.
  8. TFOT is held at Maxwell AFB and lasts six weeks.  Upon graduation from TFOT, candidates are commissioned as 2nd Lieutenants in the USAF Reserve.
  9. SUPT is held at one of four USAF bases in the southern U.S.  SUPT lasts approximately one year.
  10. After completion of SUPT, new Pilots will attend Water and Combat Survival Training at Fairchild AFB, Washington, lasting about four weeks.  They will then attend USAF KC-135R Pilot Initial Qualification (PIQ) Training at Altus AFB, OK, lasting approximately five months.
  11. Upon completion of KC-135R Pilot Initial Qualification (PIQ) Training, the officer will return to the Nebraska ANG, where they will receive an additional 45 days of active duty for Home Station Training (HST).  Officers will remain on continuous active duty from the time they begin SUPT until they complete their HST, no exceptions.  However, prior to and post SUPT, if there is a 30-day or more gap between training specialties, the candidate will come off orders and will not be paid.
  12. After completion of all HST requirements, the now combat-ready KC-135R Co-Pilot will revert to Traditional Guard (part-time status).  They will be required to perform ground and flying duties as required to meet currency, event and minimum training standards, as directed by the unit Commander.
